Rooted in China, building a solid foundation for a trusted partner in the dual carbon strategy

As China continues to transform towards the development of new productivity and a low-carbon economy, ABB continues to upgrade China’s industries with its technological leadership and in-depth local cooperation, and continues to empower China in terms of energy efficiency, industrial innovation and sustainable development.

By the end of 2024, ABB China’s motion control field will have delivered more than 13 million inverters and high-efficiency motors, saving a total of 569 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to a reduction of about 567 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, equivalent to about three years of electricity consumption in Shanghai[1]. ABB has always adhered to the “In China, for China” strategy. More than 85% of its revenue in China comes from locally produced products and solutions. Through the organic integration of expertise, advanced technology and local investment, it fully supports China in achieving its dual carbon goals.

ABB helps Chinese customers save energy and increase efficiency with its efficient products and solutions, and the project results are remarkable. In the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, ABB’s M2BAX motors support the construction of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway with their excellent performance; on the shores of the Bohai Sea, M2BJX permanent magnet synchronous motors help customers reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 500 tons per year, equivalent to the average annual household electricity consumption of about 167 three-person families in China [2]… ABB continues to innovate, using cutting-edge products, solutions and services to help customers optimize motor performance, reduce energy consumption, and contribute to energy conservation and efficiency improvement in all walks of life.

ABB is also actively practicing the low-carbon concept in its own operations to achieve net zero emissions. According to Stefan Floeck, as one of the first certified zero-carbon factories in Shanghai, ABB’s motor and generator Shanghai base has gradually deployed a number of low-carbon and carbon reduction measures at the factory end since 2016, such as installing photovoltaic equipment to meet 20% of the annual electricity demand of the park, forming a green fleet to encourage the use of electric vehicles, and introducing an intelligent butler system. Stefan Floeck said: “In the future, ABB Motors and Generators Shanghai Factory will use more efficient fans and pumps in HVAC systems, further promote photovoltaic technology, and upgrade air conditioning systems. At the same time, we will continue to increase investment in the research and development of efficient products, and better serve the industry and society through the continuous iteration and upgrading of high-efficiency motors.”

As ABB’s second largest market in the world and the cornerstone of its international strategy, China is confident that ABB will continue to be an important driving force for China’s next stage of development with its common goals of sustainable development, technological innovation and industrial transformation.

Digital empowerment, focusing on cutting-edge technology to open up new situations

At present, artificial intelligence has entered a stage of rapid development and has become the core driving force of a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, and is also a key area for the development of new quality productivity. For ABB, the FE Championship is not only an important sports event, but also a stage to showcase innovative technologies. The ultimate goal is to help build a cleaner environment and accelerate the process of energy transformation. At the same time, ABB also announced the winning results of this year’s AI accelerator project, focusing on the in-depth application of artificial intelligence in industrial and other scenarios, and exploring more possibilities of “AI+”.

ABB actively embraces AI technology and realizes innovative applications in multiple links such as R&D innovation, production efficiency improvement, and service upgrade. In this year’s AI accelerator project, employees from ABB around the world submitted more than 340 innovative practice cases, which not only demonstrated the depth and breadth of ABB’s exploration of AI technology, but also provided the industry with a new path for cost reduction and efficiency improvement. For example, ABB is currently exploring the deep integration of AI technology into the key stages of motor selection and engineering design to help improve the accuracy of user product recommendations and optimize the design process efficiency of engineering teams.

ABB’s innovative genes are not only reflected in the arena, but also integrated into products. In 2024, ABB IEC low-voltage motor business launched the IE6 ultra-high energy-efficiency motor, which not only inherits ABB’s consistent spirit of innovation, but also has the same size as the equivalent IE3 induction motor, making it easy for customers to replace traditional motors and help customers achieve future operational sustainability through product upgrades. Stefan Floeck emphasized, “ABB IEC low-voltage motors will continue to rely on their technological leadership and deep involvement in the local market, and play a key role in this process, improving energy efficiency, promoting industry innovation and promoting sustainable development.”

ABB IEC low-voltage motors are upgraded again to achieve the expected IE6 ultra-high energy efficiency

The innovative practices and sustainable development achievements of the IEC low-voltage motor business are the epitome of ABB’s empowerment of industry change. In 2025, ABB’s two companies in China (ABB High Voltage Motor Co., Ltd. and Shanghai ABB Motor Co., Ltd.) ushered in the 20th and 30th anniversaries. Stefan Floeck revealed that ABB plans to continue to invest in product efficiency, reliability and sustainability, enhance local R&D and production capabilities, and launch M2BAF IE5, M2QA-FB IE5 and M2JAX IE5 ultra-high efficiency motors, AMZ 1400 permanent magnet shaft generators this year. At the same time, ABB will also create a green manufacturing benchmark through innovative zero-carbon factory operation models and implement sustainable commitments in all aspects. In the future, ABB will continue to increase its R&D investment in China to help customers achieve leaner and cleaner operations with more efficient products and solutions, and drive an efficient and innovative future.
